Wargaming made its way to Singapore when a number of people here read about them in the news, magazines and other sources and ordered them from aboard in the seventies. There was a community of wargamers since the seventies and some of these wargamers are still active.
In the early eighties, wargaming thrived in Singapore with lawyers, civil servants, engineers and others, essentially a professional crowd. In terms of the young there were students in elite schools like the Anglo-Chinese School and Raffles Institution.
The wargaming community was at its peak in the late eighties. Leisurecraft, a now defunct store, was the main retailer for wargames then and the centre for wargames. Robinson’s and Metro were the two other sources of wargames.
There was also the SAFRA Wargames Club that had organised interschool competitions for Squad Leader. The SAFRA Wargames Club, which was based at Bukit Merah, thrived then but was affected by the eventual decline of wargaming. Then, came the end in the mid-nineties.
The advent of cheap computers and the rising popularity of RPGs and collectible card games put paid to newcomers to wargaming and the decline of the community started.
Today, the community consists of a handful of players. The directory is created to assist wargamers in locating other wargamers for a game.
